A book about the subscription. What is it about?

It happened without you noticing. A free trial, a click, and a small decision has turned into a lasting commitment. Hardly any area of life still gets by without several parallel subscriptions. Canceling is possible at any time, in theory. In practice, leaving remains unlikely.

A subscription isn’t a way of paying. It’s an architecture that organizes time and access — at the expense of what you actually control. Signing up means binding yourself to a structure that can withdraw at any time what it granted a moment ago.
The author follows this shift from everyday life through psychology and power. It leads to companies that lose control of their own infrastructure, and on to the geopolitical level, where the same logic operates at scale.

For individuals: a new perspective on your own subscription landscape.
For decision-makers: the dependencies behind every SaaS contract and every cloud migration — plus specific criteria for when a subscription holds and when it tips.

The book doesn’t stop at analysis, and it isn’t a guide to optimizing subscription models either. It lays out alternatives, both for the people who use subscriptions and for the people who design them, and it ends with its real point: No single subscription is the problem. It’s their interlocking that produces a dependency no individual can dissolve alone.

Background

At the end of 2025, I decided to turn one of my ideas into a book. I’d kept stumbling over the topic of subscriptions anyway, so I set out to research the many dimensions of how subscriptions function, their effects and interactions, their connections, and more.

The result surprised even me: as a structure, the subscription has properties and consequences that almost no one is aware of. We all use subscriptions, whether as providers or as consumers. But the fact that the structures behind them shape even the biggest stages should be known, at the very least, to people in decision-making positions — and of course to anyone else interested in how we structure business and life in our digital societies.
