Who do I resemble right now?

“Who do I resemble right now?” That is one of the most effective questions I ask myself in challenging moments. Because:
In my concrete behavior (not in my ideal self-image), in my voice, in my gaze, in my posture, in the way I tackle or avoid a problem, there are fascinating insights to be found.
When I am honest with myself, the answer is usually surprisingly clear. It reveals a loyalty that runs deeper than I was aware of.
“That’s how my father always reacted.”
“That sounds exactly like my mother.”
Such unconscious loyalties are not mistakes. They are imprints, often formed out of love. And they steer more than we think. Much more! In relationships, in decisions, in leadership.
Admitting this to yourself honestly can be uncomfortable. And it can also be the first step out of an old pattern, on the way to choosing something of your own.
I’m sure something comes to mind for you.
