Development does not end

We often act as if life were settled once school, vocational training, or university is over—“finished” and grown up. That is true only on the surface. Human development does not end. It just proceeds less visibly, apart from growing older.
Development of consciousness mostly happens when life forces us: crises, losses, ruptures. Whenever our worldview no longer provides an answer, we begin to waver—and sometimes to grow.
I call this vertical growth: growing in waves, not guaranteed, but possible. Some stay where they are—happy, uneventful, or wrestling with life. Others set out on paths that change their entire experience.
Why am I telling you this?
Because we hardly distinguish between two forms of development:
- Horizontal: More knowledge, more skills, more fields of expertise—important, but mostly within the same world of thought.
- Vertical: A leap into depth—what we hold to be true starts to move. Our perspective widens.
Vertical development lifts our being, as if a two-dimensional mesh were suddenly given room to spread out into a three-dimensional form. Hard to describe—and yet palpable when it happens.
I wish for more people to discover this path. Not because they are supposed to become “better,” but because we could understand one another more deeply—and could more readily let each other be in our differences.
And perhaps that is the only thing I want with this text: a small nudge. The first step begins inside—with honestly getting to know one’s own self.
